Tinnitus

Post by Christine »

A dear, dear friend of mine is undergoing a frightful experience with tinnitus. Over the past few months, it has increased to a "screaming" sound. He has had an MRI, a cat scan, has tried every herbal remedy including acupuncture and were considering hypnosis. His wife contacted me yesterday to say that it has reached a level that has now caused such anxiety that he had to be rushed to the emergency room and kept overnight for observation.

I know this is not the purpose of this board, but I know how many caring, not to mention resourceful and intelligent people visit this board. This couple is as close as family and just "happened" to be visiting the day Bailey died. My heart is breaking for this wonderful man with a quick wit and huge heart.

To date, the doctors they have seen have found nothing and can only diagnose tinnitus with the advice to "live with it". An appointment at Emory University Hospital was next on the agenda until this weekend where the doctors are also now suggesting a neurologist.

Any thoughts, suggestions...anyone dealing with or dealt with this? Thank you.

Awwwwwwwwwwwww what an annoying problem this is.
I have it for years and I block it out sorta, at night you try not to listen to it.
Obviously this case is much worse, I assume they have done scans of the brain?
there 's a lot of info if you Google, here is one:

I have it, have always had it, and wouldn't know what to do without it. If he has a hearing loss, I'd suggest hearing aid(s). If he doesn't, I'd try a tinnitus masker(s) on a trial basis, like a hearing aid. Maskers are available from people that sell hearing aids.

I am so sorry for his experience! I used to have screaming in my ears, which eventually went away when I stopped taking asperin.

I guess you have googled it and looked at the research available online? If they can figure out what is causing it, that helps in the treatment From http://www.medicinenet.com/tinnitus/article.htm
Anything, such as wax or a foreign body in the external ear, that blocks these background sounds will cause us to be more aware of our own head sounds. Fluid, infection, or disease of the middle ear bones or ear drum (tympanic membrane) can also cause tinnitus.

One of the most common causes of tinnitus is damage to the microscopic endings of the hearing nerve in the inner ear. Advancing age is generally accompanied by a certain amount of hearing nerve impairment, and consequently tinnitus. Today, loud noise exposure is a very common cause of tinnitus, and it often damages hearing as well. Unfortunately, many people are unconcerned about the harmful effects of excessively loud noise, firearms, and high intensity music. Some medications (for example, aspirin) and other diseases of the inner ear (Meniere's syndrome) can cause tinnitus. Tinnitus can in very rare situations be a symptom of such serious problems as an aneurysm or a brain tumor (acoustic tumor).
From the same MedicineNet website, patient discussions on what works (one patient remarked that lowering the Vit.E helped the intensity factor):

Thanks, Lee. I will pass that on. I found this weekend also that it could be caused by a blockage in the large intestine?????
