Where's the smiley with a magnifying glass and deerstalker...?

My review of Brave Norman:

I feel like I should do a disclaimer here: I have particular interest in thrown away critters with disabilities; I have a houseful of them!

With that said, "Brave Norman" is a GREAT book. It not only touches on animal shelters and how critters with disabilities are treated ("Are you sure you want to keep him?" p. 3), but Norman is shown as essentially normal despite his blindness. Then Norman even gets to be the hero by rescuing a little girl who was drowning, not only DESPITE his blindness but probably BECAUSE of it (he heard her cries and responded when the humans didn't notice).

I can't find a single thing here to even think about taking a star away. PERFECT!!!!

Oooooo, sounds GREAT! Maybe I can get it from Vine Thursday, if there are any left. If not, I might just have to buy it.

BTW, I also have Trouble with Tuck, but it'll be awhile before I read it-- I'm not up to Braille books that big yet.

Kurt Unkelbach wrote a book about a one-eyed Lab named Peanut but I'm sure it is out of print. Good book as the young owner trained him for obedience competition.

I'll have to think of whether I know of any others.

Review of Homer's Odyssey

Disclaimer: I have innumerable disabled critters, including one blinded by herpes, like Homer.

I enjoyed "Homer's Odyssey" and the message about saving "less than perfect" critters, but I have to admit that I found his mom's overprotectiveness in the beginning very annoying. I found myself wanting to say, "Let the baby LIVE! Let him have a life!! Running, jumping, and climbing WON'T hurt him!!" and the like. I also admit to being very, very relieved that Homer didn't die during the course of the book, because I don't think I could've stood it at that point. I have to say that the moving-cats-by-airplane story was one I've never heard the likes of before!! Her 9/11 story was also a perspective I hadn't actually heard reported up until now.

"Homer's Odyssey" is a must-read for critter people, especially cat-people!

Oh, almost forgot, there is a book called 'Dogs of Dreamtime" which has a deaf Aussie. I liked the book although it has some unhappy parts.
