Incident Details

Incident Description: I am writing in regard to the SnuggleSafe heating disks and an incident which has brought me great concern and I am sure it will for you, too. Here is what happened when using the disk for my second time. Please notice all directions were followed as instructed. Also, I do have photos to show the damages of all items. " I was impressed with all the " safe heating for small animals " promotion about the Snugglesafe Microwave Heat Pad. The first one I tried was used once in a NON SMOKING household. I have 3 cats and it was being used for my senior 14 year kitty. It worked well the first night. Several days later when the weather became chilly again, my husband went to retrieve it from her cat bed. He saw wisps of smoke coming from the bed and lifted it up to see what was happening. When he lifted the top of the cat bed, the bottom layer had burned through onto our leather sofa and into the leather cushion. Various blankets around the cat bed were burning and the disc chemicals had begun eating through into the next leather sofa cushion. My husband took it outside into the yard where within 15 minutes the disc had caused the partially burned cushion to burst into full flames !! My husband managed to put out the fire by smothering the fire with some of the lesser burned blankets and only then did we realize how much damage was done to the leather cushion ( only 1/2 left , the cat bed was practically covered with burn marks and the " SNUGGLE " SAFE " disc had melted into a mass of something like hot wax and which also was on the cat bed and the inside leather sofa!!! This seemingly " SAFE " product went from a comfortable warm pad to a few days later, a flaming incendiary device within an hour. It ruined my leather sofa cushion TOTALLY and a remaining sofa cushion that happened to be next to it was also destroyed. WE HAD FOLLOWED ACCOMPANYING DIRECTIONS EXACTLY!!! My husband and I live alone with our 3 cats. I am handicapped and cannot walk. The fire began on our sofa in the living room which separates the back of our home by a connecting door. I was working on the computer for my job with a headset on and would have been trapped in the bedroom had the fire not been caught in the early stages which led to a full blown fire with bright flames!! This could have happened at night when no one would have noticed or when we were gone out of the house. I thank God literally it was caught early!! My greatest concern is these are sold as " safe " items for defenseless pets. There are NO ELECTRICAL or battery operated pieces to this item. It had to have been some kind of corrosive, chemical reaction causing the fire. Ironically, I had bought two here the day before the fire happened. That is why I returned them and am trying to warn others here!!! [REDACTED******** PLEASE BE AWARE THESE THINGS CAN ACTUALLY BE VERY DANGEROUS!!!! **** I love my pets , family and home too much to EVER buy another one!!! If needed, I will happily forward photos of the damage. P.S. My husband and I do not smoke, certainly the cats don't smoke either. I am horrified of what happened. Can you please help warn others about this product? I did indeed email the manufacturer in England today. They are the SnuggleSafe Co. and may easily be found on the internet. Thank you very much, REDACTED

1.0 out of 5 stars THIS PRODUCT IS DANGEROUS.

This product FAILED under NORMAL use and as result, I suffered second and third degree burns across 70% of my hand. It is dangerous and I am shocked there isn't a class action lawsuit.

I have used this item at least a dozen times, always very careful to follow the instructions. It comes with a multitude of warnings that are not present on the product listing.

One of my cats was recently out of surgery and I microwaved the pad as usual for her, paying attention to the time and wattage of my microwave. I placed it near her bed wrapped in a fleece blanket (thank goodness not next to her!!) and I soon smelled something like burning plastic. I grabbed the pad and the seam had completely split. It poured molten paraffin down my hand (and I was luckily able to get it away from my poor cat in the process!) which resulted in second and third degree burns.

I spent 8 hours in the ER burn clinic, which was the most painful experience I've ever had. My hand has been bandaged for a week, I've been completely unable to work, and the medical bills are extreme.

The company has not responded to any of my emails, but based on other reviews, I expect them to tell me it was my own fault.

Given this is to be used around our precious pets, this thing is absolutely dangerous and should not be sold at all. Stay far, far away.

Very dangerous and probable cause to my house fire in May of 2017. My home was destroyed and I lost 2 cats, 2 foster kittens and our bird. It does not heat as expected and it stays hard using directions. After only a week, or so, it burst and leaked a toxic smelling pink gel. I threw it away and an hour later my house was on fire. Many fosters in my area know my story and have stopped using this very unpredictable and dangerous product. Beware and listen to the bad reviews. This product is horrible and dangerous. Btw. I lost my 2 cats, our bird and 2 of my foster kittens in this fire.

This product is not safe at all!!!

This product almost set my house on fire. The company did nothing to even acknowledge that it was their fault. The company is located in England, I even sent them the ash (as per their request). They stated that they could not locate their product in the remains. I never asked anything from them, I just wanted them to warn people. I could have died that night. I heated up two and placed one near my couch and one on the chair. Luckily the one that caught on fire was the one in the chair. It burnt to the ground and on the cement, the flames hit the ceiling but it did not catch on fire. This all happened overnight while I was sleeping. Please do not use this product and shame on them for not warning people

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS DANGEROUS PRODUCT!
Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2016

I warmed up my Snugglesafe in the microwave tonight for the first time and as instructed. I was careful not to overheat it. It felt nice and warm when I took it out of the microwave. Not too hot to the touch but on the hot side. As I went to put the heat pad in the cat's outdoor pet house
(a stray cat that recently started hanging around my house), boiling hot pinkish colored liquid came pouring out of the pad and on to my hands and in my left shoe. The liquid was so scalding hot that it burned the skin off the top of my toes and part of my right hand. It hurt so much that I have a headache now. To make matters worse, the liquid got all over the wood on my boyfriend's back deck. There is a long streak of hardened, thick whitish colored liquid across his deck. I just spent the last 1 1/2 hours using cleaning agents, water, and a brillo pad to scrap this stuff off his deck. It's molten lava consistency made it impossible to scrap off. I managed to get a lot of it off but its still very obvious in some areas. I covered the long streak with small carpets because the last thing I need is for someone to slip on ice. Putting water on the streak of molten lava will most definitely cause dangerous icing on his deck. I followed the instructions for a 600 to 700 watts microwave by programming it for 5 minutes at first (the instructions say 8 minutes). I then put the pad in there for an extra 3 minutes because it wasn't warm enough after only 5 minutes. The instructions warn that serious overheating can cause the contents of the heat pad to liquefy and leak out, causing significant injury. "Serious overheating" is 300 to 400% beyond the correct heating time. For example, if the correct heating time is 5 minutes, meltdown and leakage can occur after 20 minutes microwave heating. I only put the pad in the microwave for 8 minutes. Maybe its just as well that this awful incident happened immediately. The product is obviously dangerous and defective & the cat could've been seriously scalded if she sat on the heat pad when it was still hot and liquid might have leaked out on to her fur. I'm very upset about this obviously dangerous and defective product and plan to contact the company to complain and demand a refund. Of course, they're going to claim that I overheated it when I absolutely did not. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. IT IS DANGEROUS FOR BOTH YOU AND YOUR PETS.

I used to use these religiously but then a new one burst when I microwaved it. Same temp, same length of time, followed the labeling directions to a T. Never had a problem with the first 2 I had. Then took the third one, the new one, out of microwave after having heated one of the older ones up the same length of time right before it, and the newer one came out of the microwave oozing the fluid from within it. Scared me to death because it was a hot, sticky substance. If that had burst on a kitten, it would have killed it. Now all I use are temp controlled non-automatic shutoff pet heating pads.

1.0 out of 5 stars This product is not safe
Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2015
Color: SnuggleSafe Microwave Heating Pad | Verified Purchase
This product is not safe. I purchased 2 of these items at the same time for my outdoor animals because it was supposed to be safer than using a heating pad or heating lamp that plugs in. Both of my microwaves are 650 watts and according to the instructions it is to only be heated for 8 minutes. The first microwave disk we put in the microwave without the fleece cover. It was only in the microwave for 5 minutes and it literally exploded with burning hot liquid and the pink plastic disk melted to the bottom of the microwave. It made the microwave spark and it set off the smoke alarms. I had to open the microwave to stop the potential fire as the explosion of liquid apparently shorted out my microwave. All of the hot liquid of course came pouring out and splattered all over me and the stove below. I got burned. I had to use a spatula to remove the pink disk and a litany of paper towels and a putty knife to clean the liquid off of everything. And mind you when the "liquid" cools it turns into a hard gel that has to be scrapped off of everything. I tooks pics. It melted through the garbage can, stunk up the house, ruined the microwave and stove top. I contacted the manufacturer via email and they never responded. They are located in England by the way. I flagged the emails so I know they read them. After a week I sucked it up, paid a fortune to call them, and called them and told them what happened. First they said I must've used it wrong. They said I must have put it in for too long. I said no. Then they said well I must have reused it to soon and didn’t give it time to cool down. I said NO this was the FIRST time we have ever used it. Then they said something must've been wrong with my microwave. After some back and forth they said that perhaps the ONE item was defective because at the time I had purchased TWO and we were still using the other one with no issues YET. The manufacturer would do nothing to help replace the microwave or anything else that the disk damaged and they were less than friendly.
Two weeks later the second snuggle safe did the exact same thing the first one did. Literally same issue. The item was completely cool as we let 12 hours pass before reheating, due to being paranoid over what happened last time with the other disk.
It was only in the microwave for 4 minutes and per the instructions this microwave was safe to heat the item for 8 minutes. It didn't even make it that long. And just so you know, we were using a brand new microwave since the first one was completely destroyed by the other snuggle safe. The manufacturer did not respond via email so I called AGAIN. I was not treated very well. I was told that we must've over heated it or there was an issue with my microwave, etc. I explained to them well first off even if we were stupid and over heated it the first time (which we most certainly did not) we wouldn't be stupid enough to do it a SECOND TIME. And this was a new microwave. Both microwaves were not defective. The snuggle safe is defective. I went over everything that happened. I was hung up on.
The manufacturer or at least the lady that answered for them made no effort to correct this. They made no apologies for my destroyed microwaves, the burns from trying to clean the liquid and stop a fire from it shorting out the microwave, the nasty smell in the house, the hours of cleaning, melted garbage can, etc etc.
If you look at the pics you will see the disk flattens and has melted to the bottom of the microwave, and all that shiny stuff is the burning hot liquid dripping out all over the place. The dried up scaly stuff is what dripped all over the stove and as it dries it hardens and sticks and is BEYOND difficult to remove.

I purchased this for my 12 year old son. He recently got a pet hedgehog. We were looking for a safer option for additional heat for this little hedgehog. We used it for 2 days and this morning it melted and burned in our microwave. Thankfully my son did not burn himself , however, this is a very dangerous product. It was only microwaved for 1 minute and 30 seconds. It should not have been able to hear to this level in that amount of time. Again, thankfully he was not severely burned by the burning liquid that came oozing out. I really wish I would have seen some of the similar reviews and I likely wouldn’t have made this purchase. Lesson learned.

After two months of using this product, it melted in my microwave. When I opened the microwave door, the contents had liquified, spilling out onto my floor where I stood in socks. I received second degree burns on both of my feet. I went to the Emergency room and it's been one month of healing. DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT!!!

This product is not safe. I used it once only to discover the next day that in fact a small amount of liquid had leaked out and burned part of the blanket. I did not microwave it beyond the recommended time. It is now unusable since it leaks. I want a refund.
