The joke's on the thieves

Post by CarolC »

Wednesday night I put my garbage can out on the curb. It was quite full and heavy. Thursday morning my garbage was gone, can and all. I have thought back over the past week and do not think there was anything in it to worry about (checks, personal info, etc.) What was in it was a lot of scoopings from 4 litter boxes, and a lot of lunch sacks containing dog waste. I express my dog's bladder and bowel in the bathroom and put the mess in a lunch bag and throw it in the trash. So I'm getting a little private satisfaction over this. I only wish they'd taken it in July. :)

Yuk! We only wish we could have seen their faces!! The smell must have cleared the room! They won't be back!

But not you still need a new trash can.

I think that is really scary that people are taking garbage, cans and all! I love what was in yours though. They got what they deserved!
Good friend of mine has now been identity thieved twice and they finally decided she was discarding things in the garbage that should not be there.
We now remove our name, address, and any account numbers from all mail. Those parts go into a 'burn' box and on the very first day where we feel like cooking outside in the fire pit (wind chill was about 19 below zero this morning), they will all be used to start a great fire. Yes, it takes extra time to go through the mail like that but, if it saves me any possibility of rip off, more power to it.
BTW, my guys wore coats this morning. It was 45 yesterday.

I recently bought a shredder at Office Max for $19.99. It will shred eight pages at a time as well as credit cards. I was surprised at how inexpensive it was.

Yes, I reported it. They took the report as far as the trash can, but said they could not take a report on the contents once I put it out on the curb. Let's hope the thieves only wanted the can. I have a shredder, too, and use it for really important stuff like cancelled checks. But sometimes I get credit applications in the mail and just pitch them. I hope that won't come back to haunt me. Not sure how they could use it though, since they'd have to give a street address...?

I do try to destroy those too. For a while, I was so tired of getting them everyday that I took some advice I heard about and that was to take all the stuff they sent and put it back in the postage paid envelope they usually enclose and send it back to them (without any reference to my name, of course)

I have had garbage problems as well, but my bin is too big to steal, which is one of the reasons that I have it, rather than individual cans.

I carefully seal all of my trash in plastic garbage bags, tying a knot in the top of the bag, so that it does not smell or attract insects or rodents. The problem is that people (dumpster divers) open all of the bags, presumably looking for recyclables, then the neighbor complains about the smell. I have tried to watch for when they come and run out and tell them not to do that and explain why and also tell them that they are wasting their time because I do not put recycables in my trash; I take them to the recycling center. If they are nice and listen and say they won't do it anymore, I offer them whatever recycables are in my garage that I have not taken to the recycling center yet. If they are not nice, they get nothing.

Another problem is that, since I live in an unincorporated county area, not an incorporated city, trash service is not provided for free by the city and is rather expensive. So, there are various people, some of whom live in abandoned houses and such, who do not pay for trash service, and use other people's instead. I have seen them drive up in a pickup truck, dump several cans of trash in somebody else's bin, then drive off. Their trash is usually not sealed in anything and includes smelly baby diapers and such. It wouldn't be so bad if they would do it on trash day before it is picked up. When they do it shortly after trash pick-up day, then it smells all week and sometimes there is not enough room for our own trash.

At times, I have resorted to putting a chain criss-crossed across the lids of the bin with a padlock. I have noticed some other neighbors doing the same thing. It is a pain to have to unlock and lock your trash daily and remember to unlock it on trash pick-up day. At times, I have been so disgruntled, I have considered trying to find where I can purchase something with some exploding dye like they use in bank bait money and such, but haven't gone to that extreme yet and it would probably result in retaliation. We already have a problem with people spray painting gang graffiti on everybody's trash bins. I have painted over the graffiti on my own bin before. There are some nice women who go around from time to time with a paint bucket and brush and paint over graffiti on people's bins on the path that their children walk to school.

When I first moved here, on halloween I used to dress up and hand out candy. Then there were reports of adults in costume escorting their children and doing home invasion robberies when the door was opened. So, I starting leaving out a decorative bucket on a tv tray with a take one each please sign by the door. As things got worse, I started putting the bucket on the tray outside the locked vehicle gate. Then one year somebody drove up, stole the whole can and contents, and drove away. I don't do anything for halloween anymore, nor do most of the neighbors. Because it is also unsafe for the kids, there aren't any trick-or-treaters anymore anyhow.

It would be a nicer world without some of the people in it. When you are dealing with major problems, it is extremely annoying to have to deal with all the little problems that others cause you at the same time. I have had broken vehicle and house windows, stolen license plates, and various other problems as well. Then there was the night that the guy across the street shot and killed the guy next door to him. I could go on and on.
