Dietary Needs

Post by GabrielDeafBlindPupFamily »

Does anyone have dietary tips to share? My ol' shot up and crushed boy has to keep calories on while not adding too much. I want to be sure he doesn't exceed a very nice trim, but I want him to get enough of the essentials. Possum's diet demands low protein, low fat (thank you so much Dianne!) and I feed all the pups the same chow.
As AmbrrNanaDog ages (she is facing her 8th birthday real soon) she needs to keep pounds off as her shoulder is 'bad'. But she is a chow hound.
Any tips appreciated.

I really believe in low fat for seniors. My vet told me that as dogs age they become more likely to get pancreatitis, even from food they have eaten with no problem for years.

My golden retriever is on Science Diet w/d dry mixed with water. He's supposed to be on k/d for his kidneys but he got pancreatitis so we had to switch and he seems to be doing fine on the w/d which is low fat. My most senior cat is also on very low fat as she got pancreatitis April 2006. She also has kidney issues and I'd prefer she were on k/d but we can't. She eat's Science Diet w/d dry for breakfast and a canned food with only 5% fat for dinner. My dog (also a chowhound like yours) is skinny and my cat is very skinny, but they are both doing amazingly well considering what all they have going on.
