Poohbear has lump on her chest

Post by grizzleybear »

Hi all.

Its been a while since I've posted here. I took my Poohbear to the vet on saturday for her biannual bloodwork. And around the beginning of the year, I found a lump on her chest. After the vet suggested doing xrays, we found that the smallish lump on the outside of her chest was the tip of the iceberg.

We found a larger mass on the inside of her ribcage. The vet is suggesting that we do an ultrasound with a biopsy. I've never had a biopsy done on a dog before, but others have been telling me how painful it can be for the dog. On the better front, it does not look like osteosarcoma, but the vet tells me that the growth is almost always malignant.

Further examination of the xrays show Pooh's back vertibrae are starting to be affected by arthritis because of her age (almost 10 now). I'm wondering if its worth the pain to take her to the specialist to get a biopsy done. If the cancer doesn't get her, it looks like a disc rupture may well get her. She's a very active senior as she still does tracking, search and rescue exercises, and we're thinking about rally obedience.

Wish this post was happier but it seems like we have entered into pallitive mode for Poohbear. She will be loved forever. Hopefully we will have enough time left to get a novice rally title anyways. Her hip dysplasia is being managed quite well as she is still a capable hiking companion. :D

In this case, I don't see where a biopsy will help anything. My ancient MamaCat didn't mind her biopsy, but her cancer was barely under the skin. Sadly, it sounds like your palliative thoughts may be the right ones.

Ohhh, poohbear's mom ... This part of the journey is the most bittersweet, because we cannot visit the thought of them not being with us together forever ... I have to agree with you and critters. TODAY is the MOST IMPORTANT DAY of Poohbear's life. Each day is. She delights in being with you. Her body won't allow the silly puppy happiness she enjoyed in her youth, but the emotions (yes, they feel emotions!) are the same.
You are her everything, and she can endure a lot to be with you.
This winding down of a beautiful life just brings me to tears.
I found it helpful to cry my eyes out for the several weeks after I determined Jude's time had come. So we had some good, joyful times. Get your initial grief out in the open, and behind you, in the bathroom preferably. And then concentrate on spoiling her silly.
Keep us up-to-date on your journey and we are right here beside you.

I really don't know why they say a biopsy is so painful. That doesn't sound factual to me. An incision, a little removal, a few stitches, and if you have it done at your regular vet you can do it in conjuction with a teeth cleaning. I'd do it. If they know what it is there may be some kind of treatment that can slow it down or even shrink it and give you an extra--who knows, 18 months. Both of my dogs are 13 to 14. One is going very strong. The other has a lot of spinal arthritis and calcification but he still gets enjoyment out of life. I had a little old very senior dachshund with very extensive calcification in her spine and she never blew a disk. I'd give it a shot.

Last week my dog Molly had cancer taken off the corner of her eye ,it was actually hooked to her eye ball, plus two tumors off her face and back. She had lost weight before surgery and was not eating and very weak. Today she eats like a starved pig and runs around and plays like a pup. Molly is almost 12 years old. It may of bought her a couple of years or a couple of months, but she is no longer in pain and is eating. Her biopsy was done with a needle and she was awake and did not act like it hurt.

When my Bronco had a lump on his paw the vet did a biopsy. Didn't bother him a bit. He was 14 when I had the biopsy done. It might buy you some time with her. But you know her best & you know what she can handle & what she can't.
Prayers being said here for you & Poohbear.

Friend2Dogs i am happy to see, molly is eating again! Good job!

My dog had a lump on his paw which was removed and turned out benign, it was no big surgery for him, he came home that day and all he wanted was to eat!

Puremutt, Molly was very weak and shakey for 3 days ,then she snapped out of it and now seems to be starving constantly. She had gotten down to just skin and bones but I bet she will put on weight the way she is eating. The only bad thing is I do not think she sees well or at all out of the eye the cancer was taken off.

Awwwwwwwwww poor thing! Is there another follow up visit with the vet?
You know dogs adjust to their condition, you worry more about that than she does.

I really know that its time to worry when Poohbear finally does show the pain. She's a mix of 2 very stoic breeds - a rottweiler and a shepherd.

When Pooh limped just prior to her hip dysplasia diagnosis, I knew it was time to get her to the vet. She's in better spirits than I am about the whole thing. Just need to make sure I spend quality time with her. Does anyone know anything about using essiac tea with animals?

I used the essiac tea with Mason before he died as I heard it was good to get rid of cancer. Mason loved to drink it but really did nothing for him. He loved the taste for some reason and drank tons of it.

I have essiac formula on order now. Currently, I'm giving her grapeseed extract and Pau d"arco caps. Has anyone used any of the following: neoplacine, avemar, resveratrol, artemisnin? Any help will be appreciated. We've decided that we will fight the cancer as long as Poohbear wants to fight it. Will be continuing my research to find more.

FYI. We're seeing a vet with a interest in oncology tommorrow and hopefully she will be able to give more insight.

Hi all.

Got back from the vet today from getting xrays done on her wrist and her abdomen. The good news is that nothing growing in her abdomen. The bad news is that Poohbear has osteosarcoma in her wrist and the main bone in that arm. Vet says its only a matter of time before I have to send Poohbear to the rainbow bridge.

I'll be happy if she makes it until the end of March. Then she'll reach the 10 year mark. I'm praying for lots of quality time with her while she can still run around like a puppy. I've been a basket case since this whole thing started and it doesn't seem fair to lose her like this. Still I'm going to make her last days as good as I can.
