Prednisone for arthritis?

Post by sandyc799 »

My 14 year old mix,Quint seemed uncomfortable. Not so much in pain,as walking "weird",like it was difficult. He had a limp for awhile, that seems gone.Massage helps I think.
Will prednisone really help?
Also, won't he have to urinate more?????Because of the medicine????
Thanks!

Pred is a highly effective anti-inflammatory, but yes, eating, drinking, and peeing more are pretty much a given with it.

MSM also works but takes a few weeks to kick in.
We have found Cosequin to be extremely helpful in our arthritic kitties.
For more acute cases, Aspirin or Metcam and Adequan have done wonders.

I have a cat on prednisone for IBD for a month. The vet said cats do better on long term prednisone than dogs, but it can still cause diabetes or Cushing's. One thing I can say is the tablets must not taste bad. I've been giving them in a little bit of canned cat food and several times she's chewed the pill in the food and didn't look like it was bothering her.

Well,he gets one tablet a day now,and so far,so good! He's moving much better now.No-one can tell his age, that's for sure.
He is pretty spry for an older fella.Thanks.I was and still kinda worry about possible side effects, but we will face those IF they happen.
Couple of accidents, but that is a given with most eldery dogs anyway.I was prepared for that.
At his age,we just take it one day at a time, and do the best we can.
