Welcome Salvadore and Angelina

Post by Bendy Kitty »

two cats who had not seen the light of day for nearly four months
kept in a small bathroom w/out a window
just an INTAKE vent, not even a real AC vent
fed every four to five days

a neighbor was asked to look in on them and was horrified, she convinced the owner (who has moved in with an animal hating bf) to sign them over to Marleys.

they are donig much better here. A kind person is sponsoring them and paying for a vet workup later this week.

Angelina came out of hiding last night so mom could pat her. Salvadore is a love and greets her with headbonks :)

BAD NEWS

from mom's email:
'I had thought Salvadore was eating less because he wasn't feeling so starved. I was wrong.the past 72 hours have seen him realy go downhill.
His labwork cam back complicated. yes he is hyperthyroid, but not horribly so. he has some signs of pancreas problems, one indicator of possible liver problems even though the other valus were ok. kidneys ok.
he has a heart murmur - secondary to the thyroid probably - and a veyr high heart rate.
the vet wanted him on Tapazole for the hyperthyroid, Doxycycline just in case of a few other things, and recheck in four weeks. Seh was clearly concerned about him but I did not get the feeling she expected him to nose dive.

he does not want to eat. last night i force fed him a small can of kitten food mixed with Nutrical. Sometime this morning he puked it back up. He is needing more and more fluids.
His breathing very fast and shallow.
I gave him some theophyllinen to help him breathe and another 100ml of fluids. I'm giving him metochlopromide in case he is nauseous (started that two days ago). When I got back from the flea he was flat on his side, he picked up his head to smile at me and purred. After I ran fluids he perked up a little. He is now sitting in a loaf. He has no energy. I gave him a dose of Metcam to make him comfy, in case something was hurting. it won't fix anything but it will make him feel better. the b-vitie shot i gave him yesterday didn't do a thing.

Angelina has been moving around a lot, I saw her in several different places yesterday. I havne't seen her and cant' find her today. She usually comes out in the evening.

Realistically, I don't think I can save Salvadore, but I'm giving it my best and I'm keeping him comfy.'

Tapazole takes a few days to get them back to normal thyroid function, did the vet offer any kind of heart medication such as a beta blocker?

UPDATE:

mom had an appt for his at 10:45 they wanted to keep him for x-rays.
mom said fine. she needed to come home and sleep. 4 hours isn't much to run on.

he was perkier this morning, looking like a sick cat instead of a dying cat, sitting up in a loaf position instead of lying flat. dehydrated but not as much as yesterday.

mom just talked w/the vet. his lungs & heart look ok. he has a lot of air in his stomach & intestines, can't see much else cuz he is so thin. tehy want to do an ultrasound. mom is waiting for feedback on that.
going to do the FeLv test, mom talked with her about which test they were using, the new 3-way which also does heartworm has been shown to give more false positives!!!! it is what they have. the vet said that if it is run on serum instead of whole blood it is more accurate so they will do that.
mom seyz what is the point of a test if it is innaccurate?

will give updates as i have them.
mom needs coffee now.

OK We have an answer!!!!

it is.....

IBD from ####.

EVERYthing is inflamed, poor guy. gut all inflamed, all his organs inflamed, but evenly so, no nodules, no masses, no wierd spots.

all that food set off his poor gut allergies and inflamed everything. poor guy.

he is on famotidine injectable (anti nausea), cyproheptadine (appetite stimulanet) and prednisolone. have to wait a day before starting the pred cuz we gave him metacam sunday. his poor gut is sore.

i will share my special fud if he wants it hpoefully we can get him settled down and back on track.

KEEP PURRING, we still have a ways to go!

I know the vet wants him to eat and B-12 didn't work, but cyproheptadine can increase the heart rate. Don't know what else to say, you might expect some upset with rehoming but I wonder what kind of feeding the two kitties actually were getting where they were before? :|

When I first saw Angelina I thought she looked older than 12...just my impression from the photo.

the vet did warn mom about the increased heart rate with teh apetite stimulant.
the good news is that Salvadore ate a little baby food thsi evening, so his interest is returning. mom is goign to mix some nutrical with the babyfud next. and we'll see if he likse my kibble.

he had only been getting meowmix dry before, which would explain why he was in such horrid shape, not good for kitties with food allergies!

Gads, I am so there, thinking back on AngelTillman, every day was a question. I believe Sallie may start to mend, with your ma's gentle and knowledgable touch. Gads. Even so, they have LOVE AND CARE that they never had before. Thank goodness they found your mama right in the very snick of time!
