Being "down" isn't so bad..
Candy started and finished his APDT
Rally RL1 title this weekend at Goleta Valley Dog Club in California.
He received scores of 201, 202, and 206 (out of a possible 210
including 10 pt bonus) and 4th, 3rd, and 2nd places. He also tied for
first in Veteran's but lost the runoff by time and got 2nd place.
What makes this little dog amazing is not only was he working for me,
the owner/handler he only met at the end of May this year, and after
only 5 weeks of Rally class, but he did it in his cart. Candy was
owned and trained (beautifully) by his former owner, who unselfishly found
him a new home this past spring when she could no longer lift him and
he was cooped up all the time as a result. Linda trained him for
agility (after a basic obedience class) at which he excelled, but in
2004, at the age of 4, he ruptured several disks and unsuccessful
surgery left him paralyzed. Linda then trained him for his TDI and
did therapy work with him until her own health kept her from being
able to work with him anymore.
I adopted him from Linda in May, just after he turned eight (the
minimum age for APDT veterans), and put him in a local rally class as
a way of bonding, but he loved it and was so good at it that we looked
for competition. I knew AKC wouldn't let him compete but was happy to
learn that APDT would. Then I was unhappy to learn that Goleta Valley
Dog Club holds the only APDT trials on the west coast, so we skipped
out on agility this weekend to drive the 4 1/2 hours to Santa Barbara
to compete.

Re: Being "down" isn't so bad..
I'll bet Linda is thrilled to see what you're doing with him, and if you did that well the first time out, imagine how he'll do with a few competitions behind him. This is so cool! Congratulations!!!
Re: Being "down" isn't so bad..
Well, we won't get to do many competitions. APDT isn't very big on the west coast, and AKC won't let Candy compete. There are only two trials a year on the whole west coast (both the same club.) In Canada CKC won't let him compete and CARO, which will, is 12 hrs from our cabin up there. I hope we can do the spring trial, though, and go for Level 2.CarolC wrote:I'll bet Linda is thrilled to see what you're doing with him, and if you did that well the first time out, imagine how he'll do with a few competitions behind him. In the meantime some of us are lobbying the AKC to change the rules, but that isn't likely to happen soon.

Re: Being "down" isn't so bad..
That's just WRONG of AKC!!!!Bobbie wrote: APDT isn't very big on the west coast, and AKC won't let Candy compete.
Re: Being "down" isn't so bad..
It really is wrong. They keep mixed breeds out by saying AKC's mission is to promote the purebed dog (which I respect even though I think that allowing mixed breeds to compete in one venue (rally) would turn some people on to purebred dogs. But they allow disabled handlers (and did even before the ADA) but won't allow disabled dogs. Well, not all disabled dogs.. Jack with his one eye would be allowed, including in agility, but Candy can't compete (and couldn't without adaptations to his disability, but they allow the handlers to make those.) The difference is that some might perceive that the course is "easier" for Candy because he doesn't have to sit (and they can lose points for not sitting.)critters wrote:That's just WRONG of AKC!!!!Bobbie wrote: APDT isn't very big on the west coast, and AKC won't let Candy compete.
Someone told me she thinks it is because they don't want the public to think I'm out there forcing a poor crippled dog to work but I think more likely they don't want the public to see disabled purebred dogs at all. What I want is for people to see that Candy does not have a handicap; he just uses wheels instead of back legs.

Re: Being "down" isn't so bad..
Who makes the decision? Is there anyway to campaign for a special category? You would think they would want the positive publicity that has to result with a residual of saving more lives Congratulations for the things you and your little guys are accomplishing now!

Re: Being "down" isn't so bad..
A few years ago they had a rally survey so a bunch of us wrote to ask to have dogs in carts allowed to compete with no results. Now I have a friend who has a friend who is an AKC rep working on it. She's sending him Candy's video and title info and has sent videos of her dog doing Rally also. The trick to doing these things is to bring it up often and pretty soon you have people thinking "Why aren't we doing this?" instead of "Why should we?"

Hi Bobbie,
If I have room in the next HandicappedPets newsletter, may I put something in about your dog and possibly use his photo?
Thanks,
