New to this whole situation....

Post by Madison'sMomma »

Hi there. New to the site and dealing with my baby not being able to walk. I awoke last Monday morning to a very sad looking girl. Madison is a 7 yr old beagle who is my constant side kick. I panicked and took her to my normal vet. We have dealt with soreness and crate rest before but never before did we have paralysis. I was a wreck. We put her on IV meds and little improvement over the next two days. I took her to the specialist on Wed and off to surgery we went. She never lost deep pain response so I am remaining very hopeful. Every morning she has something new to show me. I am doing her PROM three times a day and she is pretty receptive as long as she gets belly rubbins in between each set.

I very much appreciate all of your stories and your sharing of experiences. It has helped me feel less alone and more in control of this whole nightmare.

Has anyone had quick recoveries if deep pain was never lost?

Thanks!!!!! :D

Welcome to the forum!

I am not sure what surgery you had done for Madison. Many dogs have recovered relatively quickly, many take a lot of time, but cant really give you much info till I know a bit more about what happened? I have one dog that is walking and he did not have deep pain response according to 2 neurologists. Never give up, even if the worst case scenario is that Madison is in a cart, I have several of them and they lead happy, healthy, active lives. Dogs adapt better than we di I think.
Agian welcome, and I hope to hear more re madison.

Sorry:) Can you tell I am tired? Madison had a disc rupture last Monday. She had a myelogram and a hemilaminectomy. She is currently sporting a reverse mohawk and looking pretty fab if I do say so myself. I was a wreck most of last week. I think my little girl is quite the fighter though! Today doing her PROM in the morning she pulled her right leg away from me and when she is trying to make herself comfy on her blanket on my couch she will move her legs to help. I think overall she is doing excellent. Not trying to count my eggs before they hatch but I am hoping/praying she will be able to stand if not take a step or two by Saturday? She amazes me. But on the bright side I have been early to work everyday since I am up to do her prom and ice pack:) :D

sounds like she is coming along. thanks for the info, we hae many here who have had that surgery successfully. Once they start to iimprove, they can absolutely amaze you. Did your vet have instructions on how much or how little exercise she will be allowed.

Five minte walks three times a day mixed with her PROM with ice pack on the staples to follow immediatly for 15 minutes. She has adapted quite well to the harness and we always take a couple minutes to sit in the grass with belly rubbins of course in between for her to relax. She will of course no matter how much she improves be in her crate for the four weeks minimum. She gets to cuddle on the couch right now and is laying next to me snoring loudly. Yet another happy sign that she is feeling more like herself. I am hoping after recovery she loses weight and will be more active than ever before. She has had thyroid problems and never moved around alot but hoping that the disc was a huge part in her being so quiet.

welcome, did your vet not tell you to 100% crate rest for 6 to 8 weeks? my cricket had a disk rupture in 06, had surgery. i was told to crate rest, only out to do R.O.M and express bladder. it was hard but it worked. he had to heal and rest. he still is paralyzed, but spinal walks, and runs all over the place on all 4's.. cannot pee, but that is no trouble. withthe help of this site, i learned all the tricks. lol.
good luck and prayers are with you and your baby. but careful , she could do more damage if she dragged or pulled herself around house or fell off couch! i had 2 vets in 2 different states, they both told me 100% crate rest was so important.
hugs and doggie kisses,
connie and cricket

She is crate rested 99.99% of the time. They told me to do the five minute walks three times a day and her range of motion exercises and then an ice pack for 15 minutes after all three sessions. She is not alot to move around at all and even before the disc rupture this was not an issue to stay put in her spot on the couch lol. I have a couch that has a chaise lounger on the end and she curls up in the corner with my feet in front of her. I checked with the doctors before I allowed this and they said as long as she can not move off or fall off then it is great so she doesnt feel too isolated or depressed. I have been very fortunate that she is able to pee and poo all by herself. I think it is her way of saying thank you:) I have watched a few of your videos of cricket(if it is the same dog) what an adorable animal!!! I just wanted to hug him. She is showing me improvement every day and I can not ask for more! Oh and the 6-8 weeks? They said they will check her at the 4 week mark and may allow more action but still no jumping, running, or climbing.
