animal catheters?
well, i'm going to take him back to the vet today and have her show me how to express his pee. i'm gonna also talk to her about putting him on steroids. well, i'm going to tell her that's what i want to do. if she refuses, i'll take him elsewhere.
she said she will have to get him a referral to see a neuro and i'm gonna tell her to get that in the works.
thanks everyone!

Find out what "complete" involves.
I would go first to get consult, observatin & a hands on neuro exam. Are they including an MRI picture in with the exam? A picture normally is taken right before surgery so neuro can plan the incisions.
What is the neuro's name, and the name of the facility? What state do you live in. Can you get in touch with a Univeristy Vet teaching hospital? They have neuro there too.

i have no idea what it includes. my vet said that they might do an mri and suggested that it may be why the cost is a bit...much. we have his xrays and medical records to take with us and i'm going to ask the doc to just give him an exam and check the xrays that i have before they tell me that i will need the complete package!pmilner wrote:Find out what "complete" involves.

the neuro is board certified and he's at auburn university. i can't remember his name, she did tell me. i think i was just stunned about the 1500.00. eek!
good news is, she showed me how to express his pee. i just hope i can get the hang of it soon.
thanks for the link, i will check it out right now.
i honestly can't thank you guys enough! :hugs to all:
OK now I'm feeling you will get a good neuro exam at Auburn U.
MRI's are expensive. More about the different pictures and what they can tell a vet.

my little man is doing great! he started walking again and the same day he peed on his own. this was a little over a week ago. i called my vet's office to tell them i wouldn't be picking up the catheters they ordered for me and when i told them why, the response i received was, "that's impossible." i told the nurse that she was more than welcome to come sniff the leaf pile he peed on.
the neuro told me yesterday that he's a "miracle."
the xrays they took looked nothing like what we brought from our vet's office. they thought he had a bone tumor based on those xrays, but after they ran a bunch of tests...well...he's a "miracle."
i'm still VERY grateful for all of your responses and patrick sends his love.

I think using catheters puts him at risk for UTI's. You don't want that for him, but on the cost side you mentioned, you'll spend more in vet bills and antibiotics. It's difficult to do a truly sterile catheter. Males are easier than females of course, but, I would steer clear of them, even though the convenience factor is initially appealing. Hang in there, you can do it how all the experts have advised you. Amy
