Keeping diapers on

Post by carwoman »

Hi,
I've got a puppy who's almost a year old who was born with a birth defect (hemivertebra) and is partially paralyzed. He can move his back legs, but can't stand. When not in his wheelchair, we keep a diaper on him (which I've had to custom sew) but due to his shape and lack of muscle mass in his legs, it tends to slip off. Does anyone else have this problem and how do you manage it? We've got a drag bag, but if he goes inside that, it of course has to be washed so we need another option.

Thanks for any ideas!

:whale: Yeah, keeping diapers on can be a problem! Baby Onesies may work, but sometimes you need the turtleneck ones to keep the critter from coming out of the neck hole! There are loads of diaper covers and diaper suspender systems that may help, but I think I'd start with local pet stores, where you can try them on him before you buy. If none of them work, you might be able to work something out with other people, like swapping ones that don't fit their critters. I've done the same with diapers, trying to find the right size and brand, because human diapers don't fit the same on critters.

The easiest way to keep the diaper on may be to put him in a little nylon chest harness and clip the waistband of the diaper to the harness with a little suspender. There are a lot of things that can work as a suspender. For example those elastic clip on things you buy to keep your bed sheet tight. Or the ones you use to keep the tablecloth on the picnic table. Or mitten keepers. I remember someone just made a hole in the waist of the diaper and used a shoestring to fasten it to the chest harness, which would work till you find the exact right straps. Here is a photo of a dog wearing something like I am trying to describe. I'm not sure what exact thing to recommend since I'm not sure what size he his, if he is bigger he will need a longer suspender. The ones in the photo below may be ironing board clips.
