Blood in urine

Post by Pixigirl123 »

Went to vets today because there was blood in my dogs urine . He is paralyzed from waist down . Vet said it’s not an infection but the bladder is now damaged , they have sent me home with a catheter to use on him twice a day ! They also said that this may just be the beginning of a whole host of problems! We are at a loss what to do , he’s ok ish , at the moment but I don’t ever want him to suffer . Advice will be welcomed please .

That does not sound right to me. :? Or at least it sounds very, very unusual. Why did he say it is not an infection? Did he take a urine sample and test it properly? Are you sure he tested it properly?

With all the people who have posted on this forum with incontinent dogs or cats, nobody that I am aware of has ever damaged a bladder by expressing their pet.

On the other hand, a bladder infection would not be surprising with a dog that you have only been expressing for a short time. It takes some practice to get good at expressing, and it is easier for the dog to get an infection in the early weeks if he is not getting completely empty every time. In fact, it is so common that some vets will put the dog on a preventive antibiotic while the owner is learning to express.

Some people do empty their male dog's bladder with a catheter. That is OK. But it is very, very important to always maintain sterile procedure when you catheterize. I would not catheterize a dog unless he is just impossible to express.

I would get a second opinion.

Yes they did take a sample and tested it , saying there was no infection . They said I did not damage the bladder, it’s not working properly down to the damaged disk in his back !

I am sorry if I misunderstood. If the blood is not coming from a bladder infection, then what is causing the blood? A disk problem can cause incontinence, and you said your dog was incontinent both ways. But the disk problem itself does not cause blood in the urine. Blood in the urine would normally be caused by an infection. Another possible cause of blood in the urine is physical trauma, such as being kicked or being in a car accident, but that would show up right after the accident, and your dog collapsed from the compressed disk 2 weeks ago. So I am sorry but I still do not understand what they are saying is the cause of the blood. It still does not sound right...

We don’t fully understand , so may seek a second opinion. This morning when I used the catheter there was only a trace of blood in the last few drops and where he had leaked on the pads over night , no blood !! Thank you for replying to me , it is of so much help to be able to talk to someone. Oh what I haven’t mentioned is that we are English living in Spain, so some things get lost in translation, most we understand but not all :thankyou:

It seems to be rare, but I had one who showed blood in her pee from the kidneys themselves--kidney failure. I'd wonder in this case if there might be some crystals in the pee irritating the bladder, assuming, of course, that there truly is no UTI. I'd think they'd have seen them under the microscope.

Good catch, didn't think of that one, and I agree you would think they'd see crystals (if there were any) when they checked the urine.

That makes more sense if something might be lost in translation. :D If you're English living in Spain, you are like one of our former moderators, Debbie-Spain. She lives and works in Spain (maybe Cataluna, not sure) and for years has been running the Club de Kat, which is for the care and rescue of disabled animals. Here is their facebook page.

Here was a video of when she recently transported some tigers to a refuge on Isle of Wight.

Debbie is not only an animal lover and rescuer, but also a veterinary rehab specialist, and she was working with one of the universities (or it may have been a regional veterinary hospital, it's been a while) to get animal rehab started in Spain.

Glad the blood in the urine seems to be clearing up!
