Dogs: underdeveloped kidney's

Post by Dawn Thuma »

My aunt's chocolate lab, Parker was just diagnosed with underdeveloped kidney's. There is nothing they can do except keep her comfortable. Parker is taking meds and is on a special diet. Can anybody offer and suggestions on what to do or how long she can go with underdeveloped kidney's?
Thank you,
Dawn

Dawn, I have been all over the internet trying to grab as much info as I can for something I didn't even understand, so it's taken a while! I'm clueless on kidney diseases - especially of an animal, but I've NOW learned that a dog born with an underdeveloped kidney has Renal Hypoplasia. I found a site or two that might answer some of your questions regarding your aunt's dog.

http://www.petshealth.com/cgi-bin/searc ... h&show=gen (Pet's Health) This question was asked: "My pet was just diagnosed with kidney disease. What is kidney disease and what can I do to help my pet?"

Do you see these symptoms in your aunt's dog?
"These include increased thirst and urination, poor appetite, high blood pressure, anemia, lethargy weight loss, protein loss in urine, problems of calcium and phosphorous metabolism, low serum potassium (muscle problems), stomach irritation and ulcers or vomiting."

If so, they say to do treat in this way: " The most consistently agreed upon treatments are fluids, low protein diets, aspirin, blood pressure medications, and acid blockers to protect the stomach."

This is a really lengthy report in PDF form. I think if you go to page 19 of the 24 pages and read on the Management of the disease, you'll get something out of it.

What does the vet say regarding the prognosis?

Best of luck! If I find anything else that I think might help, I'll send it your way.
