Diarrhea

Post by Dianne »

Schnitzel began having loose BM's about 1 week ago. He is NOT having accidents throughout the house, but when I do "poop on demand" his BM's are very loose/squirt at times.

We've tried rice with small amount of chicken, added pumpkin with no success. He has pancreatitis several years ago, but I am beginning to think it is NOT pancreatitis this time.

Is it still safe to use Kaopectate? How much for a 22 lb. dog? Is 2 tsp, after each loose BM appropriate?

Any other OTC products that anyone can recommend, or is this a job for the vet?

For a dog, old or new Kao, or even Pepto, should be safe. I posted a link with bismuth subsalicylate dosages somewhere around the bb this morning...
Ah, here it is

I use Pet Pectillin, clay based. When I told my vet that Petsmart sold it, he went down and bought their inventory.
It WORKS! Gabriel gets pukies and poopies from time to time and I try to keep the Pectillin on hand.
You've tried cheese, right? I cut back on food and increase water.

Thanks Karen and Critters. We just went for a family drive in the car...you do know how exciting that can be for pets. It was very stimulating for Schnitzel... Washer is running.

I have Kaopectate. I'll start that immediately. If that doesn't work overnight, I'm off to the petstore for the pet Pectillin.

Karen, won't dairy products/cheese create diarrhea in some pets?

Thanks!

did you know that Kaopectate is now bismuth based? It was a clay-based product when it was developed. Clay for some reason is safer for human beans and critters (sorry critters) but it is soooo hard to find, even children's products contain bismuth.

Karen and Critters,

I got the Pet Pectillin this morning. It contains pectin and kaolin. Isn't that the same pectin that people use in canning fruits to make them jell? Certo is the namebrand gel form of pectin. Kaolin is clay.

Wonder if using the Certo form of the product alone would also stop the diarrhea...just thinking.

Petpectillin is the same as OLD Kao; Kao is now bismuth subsalicylate. http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/bi ... page1.aspx

Thanks everyone,

Today we seem to have made some progress because yesterday I cut out all food except homemade chicken broth. He had 2 firm BM's and is resting comfortably.

Bismuth: CAUTION: Some Kaopectate includes bismuth salicylate as an ingredient. This should NOT be used in cats unless directed by your veterinarian. Dogs that may have an allergy to aspirin, or are taking aspirin, steroids, or another non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as Rimadyl, EtoGesic, or Deramaxx should NOT be given the formulation with bismuth salicylate unless directed by a veterinarian.

It would appear that Kaopectate with bismuth salicylate is still safe for dogs that do not have an allergy to aspirin or are taking NSAID's. Yes?

It looks that way Dianne. I'll tell you though...with all our IVDD dogs coming here on NSAIDS or Steroids etc., I'm glad you posted this!
Seems like good ole plain canned pumpkin is still going to be my first suggestion. I don't think pumpkin will have a bad interaction with Steroids...LOL!

Thanks FYI,

I could use a bit of help with the laundry. Washer is running now...again. Please come and help fold some of the doggie wash cloths.

Cindi,

We tried pumpkin, but that looked like pumpkin on the way in...and on the way out... Tried rice... used cherry flavored kaopectate, Pet Pectillin... This is the second week of diarrhea. There is NO way that he was exposed to any illness. None of the pets have been out off of the property.

He drank homemade chicken broth yesterday and today. I added 2 chunks of chicken today...and we're back to diarrhea.

Oh boy...........
