Hi Megan. You didn't mention Spirit's diagnosis but from what you write I'm thinking maybe FCE? That Spirit is up and about is great, but as Bobbie says you need to be really careful about foot injuries. I adopted several disabled dogs, two of which came to me with horrible, infected foot problems from where they dragged their feet.

I recently found a really neat solution to the problem. I came across a group called leggings for life who will crochet leg warmers for disabled pets to help protect them. I got up with them, got some help and started making my own. I have to say that initially I was sceptical, after all how long can wool hold up ... below you'll see a photo of Eli in his leggings. He goes out in the yard, most of the time standing and running but sometimes sitting and pulling himself round. His leggings come in filthy and stretched but wash perfectly and the lesions he was getting on his legs are all healed. As for Carl, my paralyzed Lab (the closed toed red leggings are his), he was getting through a pair of $60 boots a month. His leggings cost about $2 a pair to make, and have the added benefit of letting air get to his feet.

If you'd like me to make some boots/leggings for Spirit just let me know, I'll be happy to send some to you.

The leggings just stay on with either a ribbon or crocheted tie. Carl and Eli both wear them and occasionally they slip slightly but I have yet to lose one up the yard, unlike Carl's boots that I am forever hunting for! I usually take them to the joint above where I need protection - Carl for instance needs his feet protecting but I make his leggings to reach above his hock. The joint just helps them stay in place.
