New ramp for wheelchair dog

Post by Bobbie »

I didn't have the photo anymore of the ramp I made over the stairs (it didn't work well anyway as the dog who needed a ramp couldn't use it but the younger dogs raced up and down it.) But this time I made a ramp for a 3 foot drop for my new addition, Candy.

The framework was 2x4's, making two reinforced 2x8 boxes.
Framework- I used old 2x4's but new ones would work.

The decking is 1/2 inch plywood, 2x8 (a sheet of CDX plywood ripped in half.) I could have used higher grade plywood and heavier framing if I wanted it to hold more weight or last more than a few years. You can see next to it the old ramp that the dogs used, too narrow and steep for a cart dog.

The sides are 1x6 fir.

I have to finish painting it with paint mixed with sand for traction, but I did part of it last night and now that it is dry Candy can easily pull up and down it in his cart. When I'm all done I'll try to get a picture of him going on it in the cart.

You'll also note in the second picture my Ryobi cordless drill. If you are into building things like this I can't recommend this set highly enough- get the one with a cordless drill and a circular saw, at the minimum. I just added the lithium battery but I think you can buy a set with it (longer charge.) The full set comes with all kinds of good things like a chain saw, jigsaw, flashlight, hand vac, reciprocating saw, but I mainly use the drill and circular saw for building projects and the chain saw for trimming things outside.

I need some camera help for pics of Candy as he wants to use it when I'm going up and down. But that will be coming soon, along with the paint job.

Yes, that ramp really is perfect--the slope seems to be just right.

OMG! You are a PRODUCER! I was laughing along with you! Merlin was the one in the cart? That was soooo funny!
They are so cute!
I am so impressed. I bought a cheap video camera last year, and have no idea how to even load the video onto anything, dvd, computer, so it's stuck on a tape in the camera :(

Candy is in the cart, Merlin is the one doing the somersault off the ramp. I wish it were better quality but I took it with the video on my still camera so it is pretty low-resolution.
