Thanks, All of you! That ladder idea is awesome. I'm embarrassed I hadn't thought of that - I've used ladders in many inventive ways! Coach's harness didn't arrive on Saturday OR Monday! I was disappointed when the USPS, UPS and FedEx guys all delivered stuff to my door yesterday - but no harness. Hopefully today! Cameron built a rope/pulley/crank system outside our kitchen door.

I wish I knew how to post a photo! I'd love to show you. I haven't even figured out how to decrease the size of my photos to under 6KB to use as my id line in this forum.

Cameron built a frame with 6x6 beams - nailed it right to the post, wall and ceiling of our back porch, for reinforcement. Then he installed a pulley on the top, with heavy gauge rope. because we still wouldn't be able to hoist him up on our strength, he installed a marine crank - like what you use to pull a boat out of the water off a dock. I don't know how to describe it, that's why i wish I could post a photo. It cranks and locks by the increment, so if suddenly i lost control, Coach wouldn't come crashing down to the floor - he'd only drop an inch. This should also be helpful when we're exercising his leg strength. All of this is in theory, though....as the harness hasn't arrived yet!!!! So, I'll let you know exactly how it goes when it does come.

He's brighter today and yesterday. Maybe he's getting used to the situation. I like to think that he's realized he will get better, and that I'm here not giving up on him. I hope he knows how important he is to me.

Dogs are funny. You know how rotweillers like to work for you. It's really important to Coach that he's useful to us. He's a superior guard dog. He looks really embarrassed when the doorbell rings, and he can't do anything about it. I take extra care to show him that I'm setting the alarm every night. Always say "Hey, Buddy - look, this is on tonight so you can take the night off and rest."

He can look so fierce, and he's extremely protective of his 3 girls in the house. He goes into full protector mode when Cameron is out of town. I have never seen him bite anyone, but once when we were out of town, we had our electrician come over to the house to work on something. We forgot to tell Coach. Story has it (I wasn't there) that he bit the guy in the crotch - firmly, but not fiercely, just enough to walk him out the door that way!!! The poor electrician was afraid to ever come back, unless we had Coach locked up!

There is another great story, of how he saved a little girl staying at our house, during a burglary! ...but my posts are so long....I'll save that for another time!

Crank and pulley system for big dog!

These are for located on the back porch and work for lifting and supporting Coach, a rottweiler. In addition, there is an outdoor shower on the back porch for bathing him.

Very nice!

One of the first things we learn in science is that the pulley decreases the weight of the object by x%, depending on the number of what, folcrums? IOW, if your line goes twice through pulley and folcrum, your lift effort is reduced.
Yes, it has been 4,000 years since my last science class  But this is ingenious!

I really like the looks of that crank. Where do you buy supplies like that? Home Depot or the sporting goods store? Are they available inland?

Diane is right - I looked at that site, and those items are just like what we've got. I didn't go shopping, but my husband said he had to go to "four stores" to find the items, and he was gone for over 3 hours. Being as Home Depot and Lowes are our "home away from home" and close by, I don't think he found what he was looking for there. He said he got the crank at a Marine (Boat) Supply Store. Maybe the pulley came from there, too.

This rig was my Valentine's present, early! It sure beats flowers or chocolates!

It's a 1000 pound pulley - so it's really easy lifting Coach, I can crank him up one-handed. I like that the crank has the 1" increment "brakes" - so I can get him precisely to the right height, just so his feet are all flat on the floor, then I slowly release it, by the inch, so that slowly I can see how he accepts the weight on his feet.

BTW - his two hind legs are still noodle-like, but he does use the left hind leg. When he's "hanging" i have him walk around for treats I drop for him. Three legs move in great control, but the right leg kind of trips him up. He can almost support himself with his front legs (still not enough to "sit"). When I hold him in his harness, he moves all four legs in a walking motion when prompted. He does better after I've applied pressure (massage like squeezing) to each of his limbs, that provides proprioceptive reflexes.

He curls his toes under on his back legs. What does that mean? The vet just told me to be careful his toes could get hurt (sores).

It just means he doesn't have good control or feeling in them.

 About your Valentine's present!!!
