There are OTC animal diarrhea prods out there

Post by GabrielDeafBlindPupFamily »

don't give a human med to a cat, way too strong. The main ing. in ALL otcs now is bismuth. The kaopectate used to be clay based, no longer.
I found an OTC prod at Petsmart that I told my vet about (a LOT of my pups suffere extreme diarrhea from time to time, a total disaster in a small house) and when I did, he drove over there and bought their entire stock, because I was there the following Saturday to get more and IT WAS ALL GONE!
PET PECTILLIN.

IBD is a serious condition and we were fearful poor Possum (a deafblind lethal white with full-blown CCD & flooded colon) suffered from it. I posted under this forum and got advice that CHANGED ALL OUR LIVES (THANK YOU DIANNE! )
After doc told me to stop using the tried and true rice & cheese which I have used for years with some success in all my other dogs and tried with Possum with NO SUCCESS, Dianne said, try low fat and low protein. IT WORKED! (Rice & cheese 'bind you up'. Another note, I had a baby girl, AllixMurderedPup who had serious digestion issues and was on an Rx her short 9 months, and I don't know what it was, and my then doc who has since suffered a stroke and sold his practice told me: Do NOT feed lamb and rice. Ever. Too difficutl for Allix to digest.
AND Possum who was seriously underweight when she got here, and had to almost be forcefed now has gained 10 # and EATS willingly. I do flavor her food with whatever I have on hand, and I use Activia yoghurt in her kibble once a week or so (which she ADORES) Activia balances the bacteria in the intestines.
I would not use any immodium nor any otc diarrheal that is not clay based. The Pink Stuff is clay based, but be sure you read labels, and stay away from bismuth.
I unfortunately have a bucket load (or twelve) of experience with diarrhea.

up to 15 lb. - 1 tsp. every 4 hours

Karen, I don't think I get the credit for the low fat, low protein diet....do I? I just can't seem to remember that.

Dianne and credit :)

I tried to do a quick search on low protein and got stuff that had nothing to do with nothing.
But I REMEMBER!
Possum arrived on the rescue railroad in April.
If you have a better search engine than we have here, you may find it.
I only know that it changed our lives... Wonder where that ding dong post is?
And I'll say it again!
THANK YOU!

And I must emphasize, PET PECTILLIN WORKS! :) :) :)

We've used Loperamide for kitties once; the brand didn't have salicylates. They DESPISED the cherry flavoring, though. I can't remember now who it was that Dr. C said to use it with...

Karen's right about those sources, but why wait for a mail order? Call your local pet store and see if it is in stock. It is NOT a prescription product, but is OTC (over the counter).

Good luck. Dianne

Loperamide is somewhat controversial in kitties, but it can be used. http://www.vetinfo4cats.com/cdiarrhea.html

Why not call the vet's office and see what they recommend? They shouldn't bill for the phone call.

i would rather not go through the vet, i have gone that route, its expensive and didnt work. he was on prednesone, prednesolone, and a cancer drug (luekeran) when that didnt work he was given B12 injections. he wouldnt eat any of the diet foods. i basically gave up.
now i have renewed hope with the pet picillin, thanks to you all. i have already ordered a bottle.

Low fat has worked for my cat who had pancreatitis. Here is the best one I've found. We get it at PetsMart. Authority Indoor Formula Chicken and Rice. (Please don't confuse it with the chicken and rice hairball forumla--the cans look nearly the same.)
