Pup is not sleeping at night (and neither are we!!) HELP!

Post by wicketsmom »

Our furbaby had surgery about 1 month ago for IVDD. He has been home for 2 weeks now and we haven't slept a whole night since then. He had always slept on the bed with us, but now that he is paralyzed in the back legs we can't trust him to not jump off and hurt himself again. Therefore, we have to crate him at night.
He never liked being crated, even as a puppy. We tried to make the change as painless as possible and we bought him a playpen with a nice cushion. We put his food, water, bones and toys in there with him. He still HATES being in there and barks ALL night long.
We have also tried letting him sleep on the floor, but he whines there too.
We are desperate to get a good night sleep. Does any one have any suggestions for helping us all get some rest?

I'd make a nest on the LR floor, in front of the tube, right next to pup's crate. Get the pillows and cushions out, pop some popping corn, and get a great flick on the player, and you can all mellow out. Sing softly to him. The softer you sing, the harder he has to listen, so he'll be quiet so he doesn't miss a thing. Be sure to use his name every other word to hold his attention.

Did he sleep all night when he was in bed with you guys before? Or did he wake up and jump down in the middle of the night? You can't keep losing sleep like that. Gosh, am I hateful or what? When Brooklyn had to stay in her crate at first, she whined and cried and barked and we lost sleep. So, I moved her crate as far away from my bedroom as possible, put a blanket over the crate so she couldn't see out, put music on in my bedroom, earmuffs, whatever...sorry guys, I love Brooklyn to death, but I can't be a good mother or wife when I get no sleep. Maybe I am alone on this one. She got through it, and didn't glare at me in the morning - she was just as happy as normal. In other words, she got over it. Now she sleeps in our room on her blanket or in the living room by the fire - out of her crate - and she sleeps all night without a peep. Maybe singing him to sleep will work though...

i do not konw the dose for dogs, but i know dogs can take it. it would make him sleepy, and a good dose for the humans would help them sleep too.

it also works for yowling cats ;)
