looking for 'blindfold' for hysterical dog in car

Post by ibu nenzi »

hello all

my dog cannot ride in the car without lungeing, barking and spinning at other cars that pass us. it seems to be a visual thing. i have tried everything i can think of and have heard of to calm her, discipline her, but nothing works. she is much better on the highway once there are no passing the other way cars. she is almost 5 so i know exactly what it is that's troubling her. why it's troubling her, i don't know.

i'm now thinking of trying a blindfold so she can't see the other cars. what do you all think? any similar histories of such a problem? any solutions? any blindfolds? handkerchiefs don't work, they're off in 10 seconds.

HELP

Hi Nancy,

I don't know if this would work, it says it is for travel issues.

I've seen desensitization techniques on the tube. Dog on lead, in car, and right back out over and over, until dog is calm getting in and out and knows it is 'safe'. Then a friend approaches car with you and pup inside, calm correction when pup acts up. and likewise with vehicles. You could get doggles and paint the outside of them a solid color?
And you could try OTC calmer downers that you can pick up at petsmart, and also there is Bach's Rescue Remedy picked up at any GNC.

How big of a pupper? Little puppers with snub noses (Pugs, etc) can use a cat muzzle with a built-in blindfold.

I am having the same exact problem. I have tried muzzles, calming vest, pills, discipline, holding and yelling, and I am at the end of my rope on what to do. He is such a good dog till you put him in a vehicle. I travel a lot and by the time we reach our destination I am totally frazzled.
If you have found something that works, please let me know. I logged on looking for blindfolds when I saw your post

Put her in a crate and cover the crate so she can't see out. You'll both be safer and she'll FEEL safer.
