Power outage, caught short

Post by CarolC »

I finally got vinyl-coated wire for my clothesline, so yesterday I was working on replacing the old PVC line. Rusted hardware needing to be soaked in oil and unscrewed or cut off with a hacksaw because it needed new hardware. I worked on it till we lost the light.
:saw: :wrench:
At bedtime I had 2 loads of laundry in the bedroom that were dried earlier but not folded yet. Decided I could fold them tomorrow, but I pulled out 2 pink blankets for Dolly to have ready first thing in the morning when I did her first bedding change. I went to bed thinking there were a bunch more pink blankets in the unfolded pile of laundry.
:laundry:
At 1 AM I was mostly asleep when I heard that loud "NNNT! NNNT! NNNT!" alert of the National Weather Service on the radio, broadcasting an advisory. Everyone in the west part of the county should take cover immediately. A storm pattern with rotation was indicating a tornado in the area. We're in the northeast and it was softly sprinkling out. They only played it once and I didn't know how fast it was moving or what direction. :? Five minutes later the radio went dead. :( I laid there wondering if I should go turn on the computer and try to find out, but I didn't want to disturb the pets, so I decided to just monitor the weather. I pictured those videos of people walking around their wrecked house after a tornado and wondered if I should put my jeans back on so at least I'd be dressed.

I was imagining what we'd do if we needed to take cover. Could I get 2 playpens into the interior hallway for Pip and Dolly? They'd fit, the trick would be getting them through the doorways. What was best for our kitty? Just open her crate and let her find her own safe place, or put her in a kennel in the interior hallway with the dogs? What about our elderly dog? It might be safest for her to put her in a closet, but she'd have a fit and try to scratch her way out. Put her in one playpen with Dolly? Find a leash and tie her to the doorknob? I finally went back to sleep but got up 3 times during the night. Each time I looked out the window I could see the red lights of the distant radio towers, so I thought the weather couldn't be too bad.

This morning, no power. No lights, no radio, nuthin'. I could hear emergency sirens where people were probably having car wrecks due to wet roads or traffic signals being out. Filled the lantern so I could see and got breakfast for everybody in almost the normal way. It's a good thing breakfast does not require opening the fridge, because I didn't dare. I was trying to guess when the power went out. Could it have been at 1 AM when the radio went dead? How many hours could frozen food go? I had 3 new bags of Pip's expensive raw diet in the freezer.

Had to figure out what to do about Dolly's seizure med. She's been back on 5.5ml for a while. They said at the first sign of a seizure, give her 2ml, and then 1ml per dose till seizure free for 48 hours. I was afraid when the house heated up with no a/c or ceiling fan, she would be more likely to get one. It was already above the usual indoor temp at 8 AM and the sun wasn't even really out yet because of the clouds. But when she is on a high dose, it affects her GI tract and she gets messy. But what was worse, a seizure or a mess and not enough clean laundry? I gave her 1ml, judgment call. Do not have instructions on what to do in a case like this. Got Dolly freshened up, bed changed, everything went fine.

But the real problem occurred after breakfast when I went in to fold the laundry from yesterday and discovered there were NO more pink blankets in the pile!   They were in the wash. I had managed to wash the last load yesterday before bedtime, but not dry it, so they were clean but not dry. The power was still off and I couldn't hang them out on the line till it dried up outside. There was water standing in the yard and droplets on the clothesline. I hoped the sun would come out later. Wrongo. Later it got dark so you couldn't see well indoors, and started raining again.
:rain:
I think I had 2 pink blankets left in Dolly's bedroom and she goes through about 8 a day. I have extra blue blankets for Pip and Libby, which I didn't really want to use, but might have to.

About 11 AM I started wanting to know how long this might continue, how widespread it was, etc. I called the city information number and the power company said there were widespread outages, they were working on it. There had been reports of outages in my area, but I could leave an outage report for our address if I wanted to, so I did.

Five minutes after I got off the phone, I was standing out in the garage planning where to string a rope indoor clothesline, when the light came on. What a relief! :ecstatic:

So what have I learned? Never go to bed with a load not dried? Should I do a test run of sheltering in the interior hallway? I don't know. I didn't think until now, I have Pip's net-sided soft crate in the car. That would solve the problem of one playpen. Dunno. Need to think. Also could use some sleep.

What a night!! Glad y’all didn’t get hit too hard.

Unless Kitty’s too hard to handle I’d try to get her in the hall too. Could they all go in 1 crate, or doggers in 1 & kitty in another?

Personally, I hang stuff on the lines regardless.

:thankyou:
I think you're right. I've seen reports of cases where animals somehow knew where to move to, to be out of danger? Like a mother cat that moved her litter right before something fell on that spot or whatever? I'm sure Libby would go under the antique dresser in the middle bedroom, which wouldn't necessarily be the safest place if it gets blown around. Yeah, I could get her in a carrier and put her in the hallway, she's very sweet. I'm not really physically up to assembling crates in the dark at 1 AM after I already went to bed. My back needs some time to loosen up before I try anything macho.

You're making me think. With the PVC line I always worried the whole line would come down if I had blankets hanging on it and they got soaked. With this new wire line, I could hang up to 400 lbs. No worries if I hang something out and it rains. :D

Sorry, double post. This is what I came up with, that is actually doable in an emergency. Lay 5 clean pads on the floor, close all the doors so the hallway is enclosed on 3 sides, and roll Pip's playpen in from the living room to block the 4th side. He can stay in it as long as it's safe, or I can move him further into the hallway if there is too much wind. So 1) pads, 2) playpen 3) put pets in the area. If there is time, then 4) get a diaper for Dolly and put it on her after everyone is safely in the hallway. If there is really-really time, 5) bring Pip's day bed and put it in, or better yet his soft crate.

Millie will be pacing around in the hallway and she's got very little eyesight left so I don't want her trampling Dolly.

You know, I've mentally rehearsed what to do if I smell smoke in the middle of the night, but somehow never a tornado. Dumb.

If storms are on the agenda I hang bigger stuff on more than 1 line and use plenty of pins. For example, a “hot dog” folded sheet over all 4 lines and secured with 12 pins, 3 per line. I’ve seldom had anything held like that blow totally down, and it’s usually something stiff or heavy, like a pillow.

I've only got 3 lines, but I've done that with Millie's blankets. She has bigger blankets than everyone else, and they're thicker like Biederlack. What I was worried about with the PVC was the lines actually snapping, but not anymore now that they are wire. It has a working load of 400 lbs. I can even hang the clothespin bag right on it if I want, instead of my beltloop, but that's probably not good for the vinyl coating. The only issue now is the ends of the wire are sharp where it's looped back, so I've got 6 cut ends where I could potentially poke myself, and knowing me I will sooner or later. I need to see if there's some proper way to cover the ends, other than the tape I put on there for now.

The sun will eat the plastic coating before anything else, but I haven’t found it a problem until it’s worn out. New hardware & wire take care of that.

I’d use tape or a glue ball on the ends if they bugged me.

PS I did the sheet thing yesterday, and we had terrible storms last night—inches of rain per hour. Sheet didn’t fall.

Good on the sheet.

Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of, the sun and the plastic coating. But I have wire left over on the spool. I plan to reuse the hardware. When I got the posts off Craigslist, the eyebolts and clamps were completely rusted. I got 5 off by soaking them in oil for 2 days and straining with all my might for 2 hours. The other one I had to saw off with the hacksaw. I was going to reuse the rusted hardware after I rehabbed it, but I tried getting the threads working smoothly again on one and it wasn't working even after soaking for 2 days. No luck with WD-40 either and I got tired of fighting it. There's something better for removing rust, but I don't have any. Anyway, I didn't want to go through all that again when I'm even older and wimpier, so I got stainless hardware. I think they were like $3 something each versus $1 something each for zinc, but it would probably be $50 to get the guy up the street to do it if they rust again.

I never would have thought of glue balls. I have some Super glue in the drawer. I thought of putting a blob of JB Weld on the end, but I'd have to peel back a little of the plastic for it to have plenty of metal to stick to, and forming a ball on the end sounds like a good way to poke myself, whereas you don't have to touch it if you use glue. Right now there's scotch tape that won't last, but I put on just to get it assembled without needing stitches.

Super glue’s probably too thin to make a ball. In the house I’ve also used that foamy kids’ clay stuff to put balls on wire ends, but I doubt it’d live long outside.

Hardware’s cheap & mine was too grody to bother soaking & all that. The flip side is that the newer hardware can actually be adjusted.
