Re: Bendy Kitty (or any human nurses) about the colon pocket?

Post by CarolC »

Well, it appears that (nonparalyzed) human children with stretching due to chronic constipation can be treated and regain normal function.

http://www.rubinstein-taybi.org/blueboo ... ation.html
An explanation of the reduction in rectal sensation due to chronic distention is provided. The parents and child are told that it will require from 3 to 6 months for the rectum to regain normal tone, size and sensitivity to distention.

Oh, wow, this is timely. I wonder if this is what is going on with ruffies, she does have bowel movements on her own, and she knows whnen, but, I wonder if lax muscles in the bowel or color are causing the problem that I posted, today, she is having many small not loose movements. I thought, I was home free, she is on Hill's W/d dry as of two weeks ago and some canned very low fat canned food.

She has Ibd of Inflammatory bowel, she is 9 been urinary incontinent since she was three, lowerl lumbar paralysis and compromised bladder muscle.

I cannot have further tets doen as we have 4 other dogs, two with health issues.

Her tail twitches when she is going to have a bowel movement, but, today, twtiching more and frequent not loose bowel movemetns.

Cheaper diapers

Post by CarolC »

I found Simple Solution Pupsters diapers for $11.89 on kvsupply.com and no shipping. They want $16.99 at PetsMart and never have the size in stock. Dolly is getting new diapers for Christmas.

I've ordered the wraps for less from http://www.petsuppliesforless.com but they don't have the diapers- just the male wraps. With three large (Merlin's size) I do get free shipping- I am about to order some more as we do way too much wash.

Lotta laundry here, too. :wash: We go through 1 comforter, 2 waterproof crib pads and a playpen cover every day. I can't get 2 days' worth in one load because of the comforters, so it's 2 loads every 3 days, plus 2 towels and 2 travel blankets a week and 4 diaper covers, or about 5-6 loads a week...just for one little dog. I hang dry the waterproof pads on the line, which saves dryer space. Bobbie I think that supply place is discriminating against female dogs. We want panty parity!

New improvement for Dolly (long)

Post by CarolC »

Dolly is a chihuahua with an injury near her tail that resulted in partial paralysis. She dribbles and has no control of her bowels. However, I think she is gaining bowel control. I am posting this now as it just happened. If I decide later I was wrong, I will post a correction. I have noticed 3 things. A couple of days ago, I found a "pile" (sorry) of poo in her bed, which sounds like nothing, but it is significant because she has never been able to pass more than one stool at a time. She'd pass one small stool, later another, and they were always scattered in different places. I was thinking, "Did I feed her differently?" but she'd had her normal Royal Canin with some diced turkey on top, nothing high fiber or fatty. Then yesterday morning before we went to PT I was pinching her bottom (which causes her to urinate, pinch-pinch, dribble-dribble) and she had a stool which was not far enough down for me to pop it out. It seems after a good deal of pinching for urination, she moved the stool down, and I was able to help her expel it. That was a first. Anytime I have tried to manually pinch stools out of her bottom, they've had to have been within reach already, and new stools did not move into reach, it was all involuntary. Then last night I was getting ready to carry her up to bed and I checked her bottom to see if there was a stool available that I could pop out before we went upstairs, and an amazing thing happened. She had a nice-sized stool and I popped it out. Then another moved into place and I got that. This happened 4 times and by the time we were done there were 4 regular-sized (not small) stools, as you'd expect from a normal dog that evacuated completely, and I felt she must be empty. This has never ever happened before. I think maybe (not certain yet) that there has been some healing of the nerves governing the bowel and she has just developed the ability to voluntarily move her bowel. It has been about a year since she was injured as a puppy. I would be thrilled for her if she can learn to empty like this, it will be so much healthier. Until now, the only way we could get her empty was a warm bath.

People take things for granted, don't they.

Right now Katie is buried in her comforter and Dolly is outside, where it is overcast. I should have taken a picture earlier. This morning when I got up, I took out their package of rawhides and let each one sniff it, then tore off the wrapping and gave each one a rawhide. Dolly finished hers, and Katie still has her. She doesn't have many teeth left, it takes her longer but she still likes them. The diapers from kvsupply.com came yesterday in time to wrap them and put them under the tree. Dolly also got 2 Snoozysnug blankets, which are the high pile kind. Katie has a high pile travel blanket for trips to PT but Dolly has had to make do with fleece all this time. Now she has high pile like Katie. (Warmer, snugglier, plusher, prettier, and more safety if we ever have a wreck.) She needed 2 because we go twice a week and she wets them. Katie's will stay clean for months. I hope they will hold up to all the laundry...they are pink with bunnies... :D

I want to make it official. Dolly definitely has learned "poop on demand". We do it once a day (at present) right before I take her up to bed. I hold her around the chest so her tail is hanging down, and place 2 fingers on either side of her rectum but do not pinch, my fingers are just there. I don't know if it helps her focus...? Anyway, then she goes and she may go again.

I adopted Dolly March 7 of last year. She was 7 months old and had been injured at 2 months, which would have been around October 2008. So it has been about 17 months since her injury and we have just learned "poop on demand" without pinching, and we saw the first signs of the ability at about 14 months. She does not seem to have a strong ability to move her bowels right now, when I compare her to Katie who was paralyzed 6 years ago and can really exert. I hope it will continue to get better as time goes on. This may be useful to someone else dealing with a dog with incontinence due to an injury in the tail area.

I am very proud of her. We are very happy. :D :D :D

I remember reading that Dolcezza had regained bowel control, now I am so happy to report Dolly has, too.

[EDIT: This only works if the stools are lined up the right way, not every time.]

Thanks Christine. When you've had a dog for a year and no satisfactory way to handle this, you're pretty happy. We had a long wait till we could do this together. It's like a low key version of that scene from the Miracle Worker. Finally it has come together. I can't wait to see how strong she gets. She is such a nice dog. I am so happy for her.
