Alternative to pee pads and possible solutions

Post by Christine »

for those having difficulty navigating their pet outdoors; for those with newly handicapped pets where minimal movement is necessary; for those who spend money on pee pads; for those facing inclement weather. Just wondering...

http://www.yachtsee.com/puphead.htm (more details, comes in 3 sizes)

It's a great idea for larger dogs when you don't want to lug them outside or down the stairs, not sure, you might want a bigger size. The one in the link looks like it's about the size of a standard pillowcase, 20" x 25". They sell something like this (only larger) through HandicappedPets.com as well. The one Mark sells, PupHead, has been in business for years. PupHead must make a good product or I don't think they'd still be in business after all this time.

Would not work for my two little male dogs ,as they hike leg and would go on wall! That is what happens when I use potty paper.

I have 4 little peepots that stay inside while we're at work. We buy 50 pks of peepads every week. (thank goodness cats like litter pans). Anyway, I bought one of these, with high hopes of saving some money, but my little bears wouldn't use it. They are all very small (dachsy, dachsy/pin mix, rat terrier, and a chowhuahua) all between 9-18 lbs. After I set it up, they looked at me like I was nuts. :cuckoo:
I even tried spraying the stuff to make them want to pee on it (training spray). Nada, nix, nothin'...Then we tried laying peepads around it & part way on it. Still didn't go over. Boy was I disappointed. So I'm still using peepads (I found a site yesterday to order bulk rejects that weren't cut straight- I don't think my doggies will mind).

As far as my 2 lil' males raising their legs on anything and everything, :snoopy:
I found a spray at Walmart called Urine Destroyer. Works pretty well.

Washable ones ARE nice!! I like to use old mattress pads as the top-most blanket on the bed for Koi, my leaky boy. VERY easy to wash, and it can be possible to get them free.

I was just thinking that training a pup to go on a piece of fake grass in the shower might not be a bad hedge against future needs. You could just run the shower to rinse it off.

I used a LOT of crib pads for my baby. Waterproof, flannel backed.

They sell them all over, here's a costco link. You can get them cheaper at wallyworld, I believe.

Target. The one on the far right is what I would look at:

I use crib pads with Dolly (chihuahua). You're right, they are 2/$11 at Wal-Mart. (If we are talking about the same thing, the kind that are crinkly vinyl with thick synthetic "felt" on both sides?) The Wal-Mart ones wear like iron but even if you dry them on low or hang dry them they quickly get pills and knots all over them, I assume from the abrasion in the washer. But they remain usable and you can keep them soft if you put them in the dryer. The cribv pads from Target are a nicer product, they cost more but are thicker and keep a smooth surface better. Also you can get a bigger size at Target. Target carries very nice Circo crib pads that are big enough to cover the bottom of a playpen and tuck under at the ends--again I recommend hang drying to make them stay nice longer. I have a clothesline in the garage for nothing but crib pads. :wash:

I used the quilted cotton (human) pads with Betsy and now with Teddy. I imagine kitty claws would get hung up in the fuzzy crib pads but I don't know for sure. I occasionally find the quilted pads for $2-3 at the thrift shop (pounce!), but I rarely find the crib pads.

Thank you for those great suggestions! I'm going to Target this weekend and buy a few of those "Soaker Mattress Pads". They're big enough for all 4 doggies.
